Amanda Palmer “Strength Through Music”
Im not sure if any of you have been following Amanda Palmer’s (Dresden Dolls) video series on YouTube but she is releasing a video for ever track off her solo disc until its release date. Each video is released two weeks apart and the latest installment is for the song “Strength Through Music” directed by Michael Pope. It is a harrowing memorial to violence/ shooting in schools. The video takes place in Amanda’s old high school with actors from the school’s drama department. Its exactly how I imagined the video to be- a dreamy quality much like the Virgin Suicides. The end shot of Amanda counting down is haunting. I don’t think its any secret that i greatly admire Amanda and this is just another reason why.
No commentsThe Submarines “You Me and the Bourgeoisie”
I have long been a supporter of The Submarines and was rather happy to find out that they are their song You Me and the Bourgeoisie is playing in the background of the new iphone 3G ads and getting the exposure they deserve. check them out if you haven’t already- they sound as cute as they look and are composed of Blake Hazard and John Dragonetti, a husband and wife duo. I though their debut Declare a New State was wonderful but Honeysuckle Weeks is even better.

anyone else as disturbed as i am? Sure i expected a cheesy retro look but none of the violence made sense…
1 commentPlay This! Priscilla Ahn “Dream”
There has been a lot of buzz lately surrounding Priscilla Ahn. She’s a fixture in the Hotel Cafe scene and I used to see her on backing vocals for Joshua Radin. Priscilla’s single “Dream” is just that- surreal with lush melodies and flowing strings.
I prefer the version with strings found here
Priscilla’s video for “Dream” (w/out the strings):
She’s doing some shows this month:
10 Los Angeles, CA – Hotel Café
16 New York, NY – Joe’s Pub
22 - Santa Barbara, CA - Lobero Theatre (w/ Brandi Carlisle)
23 - Santa Cruz, CA - Rio Theatre (w/ Brandi Carlisle)
I Want You- Fiona Apple w/ Elvis Costello
I have never heard Fiona Apple do a bad cover- she takes a song, makes it her own, and the emotional impact is magnified exponentially. This song does nothing short of make my skin crawl (in a he’s hiding in the bushes stalking me but its still flattering kind of way).
Hear the Original here (just music):
Elvis Costello covering “I Know” by Fiona Apple:
I Know is my favorite track off of When The Pawn..

Nostalgia Post: David Gray “Babylon”
I recently rediscovered David Gray- I forgot how amazing of a record “White Ladder” is. I truly believe that if it wasn’t for David’s success, acts like Damien Rice wouldn’t have had the opportunity. “Babylon” was David’s biggest hit off of the record and one of my favorite tracks. I remember the first time i saw the video, completely mesmerized by his words and his rhythmic moving that matched the beats of the song. It was almost like Madonna’s “Ray of Light” video but not as overproduced or fake. The video concept was simple- performance shots cut with shots of the city. Somehow it seemed so personal and it was like the song echoed his soul. I loved the parts where you see him grin as he’s singing because it encapsulates the liveliness of the city, the message of the song, and his performance style. This is one of my favorite songs to put on during my late night/ early morning drives.
