The Duke Spirit @ The Troubadour 5.10.08

The moment The Duke Spirit stepped on stage, it was clear that the diverse audience from twenty somethings to industry types had heard the buzz. By the end of the first song, the band’s confidence, tightness and Leila Moss’s rockstar moves demonstrated that they were worth the hype. The songs played sounded much like the record but the band reinvigorated the songs. It was the slower numbers like “Wooden Heart” and “Sovereign” that emoted Leila’s ability to connect and emote to the audience. Leila Moss is a natural performer- the way she draped her arm over the microphone, how she clutched the harmonica and how she held her fists close to her heart, nothing seemed like a forced action. Pick up a copy of Neptune now. Their record sounds slick and very rock.

She & Him @ The Vista Theatre 4.29.08

I’ve been enamored with She & Him ever since i heard that Zooey was releasing an album. I love the whole retro Blues/ Jazz sound that is coming back from acts like The Submarines.
Set List:
1. Black Hole
2. Change Is Hard
3. I Was Made for You
4. Sentimental Heart
5. You Really Got a Hold On Me
6. Take It Back
7. Got Me
8. Untitled
9. I Thought I Saw Your Face
10. This Is Not a Test
11. Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? (w/ Jason Schwartzman on piano)
12. Sweet Darlin’ (w/ Jason Schwartzman on guitar)
Encore:
13. One Magic Trick
14. Bring It On Home to Me
15. I Put a Spell on You
She & Him would be one of those bands i would check back with after they play a few more gigs. Zooey looked really nervous and uncomfortable and at times she didn’t know what to do with her hands. It was only when she grasped the tambourine did she seem to get into the momentum of the songs. My favorite songs from the night would probably be “you really got a hold on me” and “take it back”. Both tracks were performed with just M. Ward and Zooey and it felt like simplicity was how they did it best.
