Tegan and Sara @ Spreckels Theatre, San Diego 10.30.07
I’ve loved Tegan and Sara since i heard “If It Was You”. I used to listen to “Don’t Confess” on repeat and lie in bed listening to Living Room and Monday Monday Monday. I remember the first time i tried to go see them- they were still relatively unknown and they played The Rosary Room, a small restaurant venue and it was 21+. Seeing ashow this used to happen often, i wasn’t allowed in. About 2 or 3 years later, T&S announced a record store performance at Off The Record and i jumped at the opportunity. This was a few days after So Jealous was released so a lot of people haven’t heard the new songs yet. They played with a drummer and did a slew of songs off of So Jealous. I was completely blown away and thus the love affair with T&S began. I have always been a bigger fan or Sara’s songs but Tegan’s work for the Con really blows Sara’s work out of the water.
Fast forward to last night and since the first time i heard the Quin Twins, they are hugely popular, better songwriters, and on an extensive U.S. tour. I had decent seats, 4th row center Mezzanine in a relatively small art deco theatre. T&S get onstage and it is apparent that they changed up the songs to be more rock and bigger sounding than the record. The sound at the venue was less than stellar- from where i was sitting, i could barely hear the keyboards. The sound was extremely muddled.
Sara did most of the talking tonight as she got off on several tangents- the first one was about the San Diego Fires and she started talking about Ice Storms in Canada. During her banter, the crowd kept on screaming and she got really distracted and was unable to finish her story until she told the crowd that it should be like a normal conversation and that people should start screaming after she finishes. She finally concluded that Ice Storms were actually really dangerous in Canada and then said something about the dance parties in her building generated heat and that it was okay. After, she goes right into “Burn Your Life Down” which i thought was really funny considering the fire situation in town.
Before Back in your head, sara told a story about a breakup and in that relationship there was a bird that her gf owned along with a bunch of ugly furniture. The bird always attacked her and would land on her head and peck at her. She had named the bird nicholas and because it lived in a cage he was Nicholas Cage. This little intro was for Back In Your Head. A few songs later, Tegan made a comment saying that She didn’t know about Sara naming the bird after Nicholas Cage. Sara said, “That was when you were on meth”. The crowd starts laughing. At which point Tegan replied, “No i have never done meth”. Sara says, no that’s not true. Meth isn’t funny. stop laughing. She then makes this face implying that Tegan was lying.
Moving on… during one of the storytelling segments, Tegan said that a few months ago, they played Calgary at the venue where they actually graduated High School from and the theatre was completely sold out with most of their family in the audience. When they were students, there was a list of the people that were predicted to be the most successful and her and sara weren’t on that list.
The best moment in the set when Sara came out during the first song in the encore alone with her acoustic guitar. She kept on making gestures to her ear but no one understood what she was doing because they were screaming so loud for everyone else to come out. When the front row started shouting at everyone to shut up, the crowd died down a bit and she started to say that she was very nervous but she doesn’t like the way that the band sounds on the song so she banished them. She starts off playing the beginning of walking with the ghost completely unplugged and no microphone! the crowd is completely quiet as she starts to sing. Im in the Mezzanine and can hear her perfectly. As sara finishes the first verse, she tells the crowd to start singing along. There are a handful of people that know all the lyrics aside from the chorus and we are singing loudly. The crowd does the second verse and sara sings the 3rd part. The crowd finishes off the song and the crowd goes crazy was the loudest cheering since the set started. it was so amazing! ive only seen damien rice do that but it was a perfect moment in the set.
During Divided, Tegan told the story about about how she wrote this song after high school and how sara didn’t want to be in the band with her until their mom made her.
The songs they played off of “If It Was You” sounded so different. most of the songs off that record were acoustic guitar based and live, they changed up the tempo to make them less folky and more rock. I wished they would have kept the songs the same and did them solo acoustic/ electric like they did for a few of the songs they played.
The Set in the right order:
Dark Come Soon
Like O Like H
Floorplan
Nineteen
Burn Your Life Down
Hop A Plane
Speak Slow
So Jealous
Monday Monday Monday
Where Does The Good Go
Divided (tegan was so into it!)
When I Get Up
Relief Next To Me
Are You Ten Years Ago
Back In Your Head
The Con
Call It Off
——–
Walking w/ a Ghost (sara solo acoustic unplugged)
Umbrella
I Know I Know I Know (i was really surprised they played this because i wanted to hear it all night)
Living Room (i was happy they played this)
T&S are such great performers. Even though they didn’t play “Don’t Confess”, they played almost off the tracks off of the Con with a fair mix from the first 3 records. I was also expecting at least two more songs from “So Jealous”. There was a lot of fun banter and even though they had a backing band (guitarist/ keyboards, drummer, bass) the twins did most of the lead guitar playing and main keyboard parts and it reflects their talent. The only quiet moments during the set were when they were telling stories and i absolutely loved it.
3 commentsPJ Harvey @ Nissan Live Sets

I found out PJ was going to be doing a in studio taping for a live Yahoo broadcast. I was unable to get tickets to her gig at the Orpheum the night before because it sold out quickly. From what i heard, PJ was only going to be doing 2 U.S. dates in support of White Chalk with no plans to tour further. I was lucky enough to find out about the show and was quickly notified that i had got in. The next night, i was emailed back saying that i could bring 3 friends in addition to myself to the taping. I was assuming that not many people has signed up for the show. Of course i get to the taping late and i was lucky enough to still be able to get in. I asked the check in guy how many people were already there and he said 273. Surprisingly, it was a small crowd in a pretty big studio. The seating was odd in that there were high chairs behind the stage alone with rows of fold able chairs in the front of the stage and stadium style benches in several corners.
As im walking to the studio entrance, i see PJ in her white chalk get up and as i walk towards her, a journalist looking woman goes to talk to her. Out of luck, i walk into the studio to see the Producer instructing people to look into the cameras and start clapping. I was happy i missed it because he was really anal about where people were looking etc. I was directed toward the back of the stage but one of the crew members points to a chair in the front row off to the side of the stage. It had a perfect view of PJ whenever she was on piano and i also got a great profile view of PJ when she would take the front of the stage (Sweet!). I was hoping she would play a bunch of songs but it was a short set:
Set List:
White Chalk
Grow Grow Grow
Nina In Ecstacy
Down By The Water
The Mountain
Silence
piano
To Bring You My Love
I loved the white chalk record but was hoping for a song of “Stories From the City Stories From the Sea” . Overall, the perfomance was weird because the producer would have the audience clap a few times after PJ Sang and there were a bunch of long pauses. Seeing PJ so close and solo nonetheless was rare so i enjoyed it a lot. The entire taping lasted and hour.
after she was done with performing songs a few 5 or so people were selected
to ask pj harvey questions.
Someone asked how she got into the [auto harp] She said she was about 4 when she first discovered it but she didn’t buy one until 95 in london, she bought it because it was “old and beautiful” as she described it. She said that when she was at the Notting Hill Gate Market, she saw it in a stall and standing right next to her was a man that looked familiar. he said, Polly Harvey? and she said Brian Eno!
There was a question about why she decided to use so much piano on the record and she said that she didn’t know how to play piano before and had one sitting around so she decided to write with it.
Another question was about how she goes in different musical directions with each record and how her collaborations had influenced her. she said that she didn’t want to do something that she had done before and this is where the experimenting comes in. She mentioned the desert sessions as a very different method with how she worked and how Thom inspired her to use her voice very differently. Then said that nina in exctasy wasn’t a great song when she wrote it but as time passed, she grew to love it.
4 commentsMissy Higgins @ Hotel Cafe 10.17.07 / Borders Westwood 10.19.07

Ive loved Missy’s music for a few years and I missed the last few shows she played in LA because i was out of town. Luckily, i was able to catch a few dates off her short U.S. Tour before she was due back in Australia for the Arias…
The thing that struck me the most was how Missy sings the songs- to see her hit the notes and how she changes her voice so close was amazing. I never realized how difficult her songs we to sing and to play by just listening to her record. Her piano playing is like her singing- She uses her voice like an r&b singer changing abruptly from one key to another with so much movement and grace. I was also surprised at the volume in which she sings. The Hotel Cafe is such a small room but there were times when she moved away from the mic and you could still hear her voice at a normal volume.
Missy had a guitar player accompany her and there were a few songs where her producer, Mitchell Froom from “On A Clear Night” came out to play piano with her. I really loved the stripped down versions of the songs. The guitarist added a more interesting dynamic to the set. I didn’t expect “Scar” to sound so different with just a guitar accompanying. I think it would’ve been ten times better if their was a cellist but having one guitarist and Mitchell Froom guest playing on Piano on some of the songs really made a difference.
I loved her in depth storytelling of the stories behind the songs like angela, steer, going north, secret, forgive me, and scar.
Set List:
Intro:
Nightminds: This is one of my favorite songs off of “The Sound of White” and I was really hoping she would play it.
Sugarcane:
Katie:
Ten Days:
Peachy: i love how she says Peachy. it sounds lush and sweet (like a peach).
This Is How It Goes: (this track rocks live)
Going North (w/ Mitchell Froom): This song is about rediscovering the simplicity in life and searching for the inner child in things.
Any Day Now (solo):
Forgive Me (solo): a song about a father asking his family for forgiveness
Where I Stood: this was breathtaking live.
Secret: she told the story about how someone told her that the best songs are the simple ones. So she decided to follow his advice and write a song with one string.
Angela: im not a really big fan of this song but she told the story of how she saw a photo in a hotel room of Clark Gabel and vivien leigh (the gone with the wind image) and how she was actually a foxy minx. MIssy named this character became Angela.
The Wrong Girl (w/ Mitchell Froom & Bonnie McKee)
The Special Two: Another fav. song of mine off her debut. absolutely beautiful.
Scar: you could really see that she was having fun with this one
Steer: My favorite song off of the new record. She told the story of her on vacation in a northern part of Australia where the beaches was red and the stars were extremely bright. She said that the song was about feeling insignificant in the greater scheme of things and that it felt like she was in control of her life. This one of those songs that is on the Soundtrack to My Life and every time i hear it, it takes me back to a specific mindset and place.
i also wanted to hear “unbroken” and “the sound of white” but that didn’t happen. When several people started requesting songs she said that she wasn’t taking requests tonight. I’m surprised Missy hasn’t already exploded over here. I’ve been a fan since the first record and her music is extremely soundtrack friendly and i can see her songs being used on Grey’s Anatomy in the upcoming months. Her two nights at Hotel Cafe was sold out well in advanced and a lot of people couldn’t so many decided to attend her sets at Borders which was to promote an exclusive release of “On A Clear Night”. I was so blown away by such a great set that i decided to go to her Border’s Westwood performance and see her again. All the songs she played were from her second disc and she was nice enough to play a few more songs because the audience was so large.
Songs played from what i can remember:
Sugarcane
Secret
Where I Stood
Angela
Going North
Warm Whispers
Steer
Missy at Borders:

Kate Nash “Made of Bricks”

You have to listen to Kate Nash. I think she’s going to be the next “it” girl. Last summer, it was Lily Allen and next I know its going to be Kate. There are a lot of UK press comparing her to Lily Allen and i can see it only in that they have the same lyrical style in storytelling but Kate is more piano and classical based while Lily had a bunch of electronic beats and ska/ reggae sounds. Kate’s voice is richer while Lily’s is more airy. Though, they both have distinct British accents when singing along to their scathing song lyrics. Lily has a knack for using the higher notes when singing while Kate stays in the middle. Think of Kate as a mix between Regina Spektor with her off beat piano playing and vocal style meshed with Lily Allen’s distinct accent and song writing style.
The track “foundations” has many similarities with Lily Allen’s songs in that they share the same theme and scathing wit. Not to mention the great chorus and melody. My favorite parts in the song are definitely when she sings bitter, fitter, the line about her boyfriend “getting sick on her trainers” and how her throat hangs on the ick in “sick”. I can feel her cringe. Kate and Nash both have that ability to eject sarcasm and attitude into their music that i really love.
Kate Nash “Foundations”
Kate Nash “Mouthwash”
Lily Allen “Smile”:
Regina Spektor “Better”
Regina Spektor “Samson”
Coming Soon to Audio Taco…

Bat For Lashes @ The Troubadour 10.9.07

photos from laweekly
Bat for Lashes has been one of my favorite musicians since i discovered her disc “Fur
and Gold” early this year. She reminds me a lot of Cocorosie, Bjork, pleasant dreams and the fables you heard as a child all rolled into one. The last time i tried to see her it was at Spaceland and they had completely oversold the number of tickets and i was unable to get in. Every time i listen to her its like I’m in that Bjork video directed by Michel Gondry for “Human Behaviour”. Bat For Lashes isn’t just a storyteller- she creates a musical realm and the music completely transports you IN to the story. Her kingdom is full of bat magic, wizards and when they play they even dress the part. Whether it be an Native American princesses, faeries, or pixies.
The highlight of the show for me is Natasha Khan’s backing band- they are all multi instrumentalists playing various instruments during they show which included- violins, harpsichord, drums, marching drums, guitar, bass, flute, hand claps, various percussion instruments, keyboards, and a few others. Natasha switched between keyboards, a stick (during prescilla), tambourine, drum, bells, percussion and bass. I was worried that in a live setting, Natasha’s voice or sounds couldn’t be recreated because the music is quite complex and requires the nuances of various percussion and many instruments. I was wrong on both counts. Natasha’s voice is simply magical. I never expected her to play “Sad Eyes” simply because it was such a quite and intimate song- she played it along with another favorite of mine, “Bat’s Mouth”. For this tour, she’s been doing a cover of Tom Wait’s “Lonely” instead of the Bruce Springsteen track “I’m On Fire” that’s on the U.S. version of “Fur and Gold”. Also in the mix is a new track called “Missing Time” featuring Natasha playing bass and it sounds great. Check her out whenever she comes to your area!
Set List:

Metric @ Henry Fonda Theatre 10.5.07

The Metric show was completely sold out. I never realized how popular they have been getting. LA shows tend to sell out but the crowds are always so so. However, for Metric they were really great. Everyone was really into it, energetic, moved, and most importantly sang along. Seeing as how the Myspace Hey Play This! felt like an unplugged performance, the Fonda show was a rock show. I will admit that i have a huge crush on Emily Haines and James Shaw (guitarist, producer, etc). I saw Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton in January and was completely blown away but her talent. She is such a versatile performer and has a beautiful voice. For her to go from soft piano songs to rock siren blows my mind. Because the crowd was so great, Metric really used the crowd participation aspect of the show on the track “Stadium of Love”.
partial set list in no particular order :
Freddie
Hooks
Dead Disco
Poster of a Girl
Empty (i was really happy they played this since it was my fav. track off of Live It Out)
Monster Hospital
Rock Me Now
Combat Baby
Hustle Rose (the crowd went wild for this)
Hand$hake$
Twilight
Standing In Line (crowd participation)
Metric is one of the best rock shows i have seen in awhile- great presence, the sound is awesome, and they are extremely talented. i hung out after the show hoping to meet the band. After about 30 min. Josh and James came out but Joules and Emily had left. Emily had a DJ gig up the street for the after party.

I saw Metric play for the first time during the Myspace Hey Play This taping at Center Staging the day before. I was supposed to trek down to San Diego to the HOB show the day before but opted out as soon as i found out i was lucky enough to be selected for the Myspace taping. The taping itself was extremely intimate- there were less than 30 people sitting on crates around the area where the band was. I was two feet away from Josh (bass player) the whole time. I could see him play every cord. Probably one of the most memorable music experiences I’ve had simply because i will never be that close again. The performance was a bit odd- it was hard for the crowd to get into the performance because the space was cramped and uncomfortable. My legs kept on falling asleep because we were sitting on the metal cases to store gear. On top of that, everyone was surrounded by cameras so we didn’t have any room to really move or rock out. But, i got the opportunity to hear some news songs that i haven’t heard before. They played:
Freddy
Twilight
Poster of a Girl
Dead Disco
Joyride
Empty
Standing In Line
Hustle Rose
Combat Baby
The Hooks (Give Me Sympathy)
The Police and the Private
Rock Me Now
Monster Hospital
Stadium Love
I really love the songs “Freddy” and “Give Me Sympathy”.
No commentsDamien Rice @ The Greek Theatre, Los Angeles

last photo by eudaemonia
I was never lucky enough to catch Damien Rice play with long time collaborator, Lisa Hannigan (The first time i saw Damien was with a full band on a co- headlining tour with Fiona Apple in 2006). But, i always felt that their voices worked perfectly together and it added a different dynamic to the typical singer songwriter dynamic. As a result, once Lisa was severed from the band, Damien’s music has completely changed and it was missing the element that distinguished him from other songwriters.
It was 8pm when Damien started to play and about half of the theatre was empty. So, i left my 14th Row seats and found an empty one in the 4th row. I thought that all the conflicting shows across town (arcade fire w/ LCD Soundsystem at the Bowl) had something to do with this but by 8:30pm the crowd started pouring in. No one came to claim the seats so i was extremely lucky to be so close for the entire set. The temporary drummer Brendan was so talented!
During, first half of the set Damien wasn’t interacting much with the audience and he didn’t seem to be into the show.It was probably because the audience was distracting and quite rude. Perhaps the most disappointing part was when Damien started to play “Accidental Babies” on the piano and before the first verse he stopped playing it and decided to skip it (its one of my fav. songs off of 9). However, after “Volcano” he started interacting with the crowd more and started to tell the stories behind the songs VH1: Storytellers style. I really love stuff like that and the concert was made extra special when Damien unplugged his guitar and microphone and did “Cannonball” solo. I was fourth row and his voice really carried. I was wondering how everyone behind me was able to hear. He ended his set with “cheers darlin’” complete with acting out the story behind it, drinking, smoking cigarettes and a beautiful fake snow scene.
Set List:
The setlist:
1 Rootless tree (first half rhodes/second half piano)
2 Older chests
3 Cross eyed bear (so so so beautiful, goosebumps)
4 Insane (never heard this song before but it is insanely good)
5 Elephant
6 Accidental babies (aborted)
7 Yoke
8 Never leave you (Vyv)
9 I remember/bang bang
10 Delicate
11 Volcano
12 Childish (i couldn’t help but think this song was about himself or Lisa. story)
13 The professor (with 3rd verse Ouvrir les seines!!! and story)
14 Amie (crowd request and there was a story)
15 Coconut skins>Jam
16 Woman like a man (story)
17 Cannonball (unplugged)
——
encore
18 9 crimes
19 The blower’s daughter
20 Cheers darlin (story)
You need to watch this- its Damien performing “Cannonball” and def. my favorite part of the show.

9.30.07 Terra Naomi @ Hotel Cafe

I’ve been into Terra Naomi for 3 years now. I watched Terra play for audiences of a 5 or 6 to sold out shows. Some of you may recognize her from her YouTube videos recorded from her bedroom more specifically, for the song “Say Its Possible”. She won the YouTube award for musical performance last year and gained a fairly large fan base around the world. Since 2006, Terra has signed a deal with Island Records and relocated to London to develop her career. Her record “Under the Influence” has been released in the Uk as of September.
Terra did a show right before she left for London and sold out Hotel Cafe for the first time in 3 years. It was a momentous send off. Most fans were used to bi weekly shows around Los Angeles. Fans like me, having been without Terra since January, have been in withdrawal and left looking for a temporary replacement. Finally, Terra is back and doing what she does best. She played a range of songs from her first self titled ep, “Under the Influence” and unrecorded material. The highlight for me is always “Flesh For Bones” because you can determine what kind of audience is present by how quiet and respectful they are. That night, everyone in the room was there to see her and it was dead quiet. Plus, its such a beautifully intimate song. Whenever i see Terra, its always a great show because its an extremely personal experience. You feel everything she’s singing about and the audience connects and responds to it. She also invited the band she recorded with to do a few faster and heavier songs. Terra hasn’t played with the band to the LA crowd for over a year and a half so it was a pleasant change in pace. But, during the piano songs like “Never Quite Discussed” the band parts sounded odd- all were talented players but they overpowered the song. A lot of the reasons why i love Terra so much is her voice and the little nuances when playing the piano. It should be the Terra show not the band show with drum solo. Some light beats would have suited the tracks better. Overall, it was a great turnout nice to see how far she has come.
Setlist:
- close to your head
- say its possible
- up here
- vicodin song
- jenny (band)
- not sorry (band)
- im happy (band)
- flesh for bones
- never quite discussed (band)
- in the summertime (unreleased)

1 comment9.24.07 Martha Wainwright @ Hotel Cafe

Martha was doing an intimate gig at Hotel Cafe the day after her brother, Rufus Wainwright’s big Hollywood Bowl gig (he was recreating Judy Garland’s epic Carnegie Hall performance). Unfortunately, i was out of town for a holiday so i couldn’t attend. Anyways, i was extremely surprised that Martha’s show wasn’t sold out as soon as it was announced seeing as how its Martha and Hotel Cafe is such a small intimate place to see her. I think the capacity is something like 250. I also didn’t want to miss the show with a possibility of Rufus showing up to do a number.
She played a lot of songs i didn’t recognize so either they were new and have yet to be recorded or they were b- sides. She only played two tracks off of her self titled disc- “The Factory” toward the end of her set along with “Bloody Motherfucking Asshole”.
This was my first Martha show and I’ve seen Rufus play once before but it was astounding how similar Martha and Rufus’s onstage personalities and singing style is. Their voices are very different but they both have the same pronounce words and stretch syllables the same way. Most of the set featured Martha playing guitar some with band backup and 3 or 4 songs with her mother, Kate McGarrigle on piano accompanying her. At times, i felt her set list was too slow and the songs were lacking because her vocal melodies did not seem to follow the music she was playing. Though i can maybe contribute it to the songs being completely new to me and not having heard them before made them difficult to digest (i like food metaphors).
Some highlights was when Martha’s mother played songs on piano and martha had to teach her the parts and vice versa. A lucky fan that almost all the songs and got a shout out from stage when she started screaming with excitement. Martha stopped the song twice- once to ask where she heard the track and again to ask her name. Also, Martha played my favorite song, “The Factory”.
When Martha’s new record comes out i will look forward to seeing her perform again.
No comments“March of Recorded Music towards free?”
I read a really interesting article in Techcrunch today. I’m one of those people that believe that music should be using the subscription model (dl as many songs as you want and pay a mandatory $_ / month). Then, you can save your money and go out to support live music and buy merch. Hopefully, the industry will get a bit smarter and stop throwing all this money on useless production/ promotion on artists that have no talent.

According to lostinthe80s they have more than one good song.
No commentsRadiohead Offers New Album For Whatever You Want to Pay

This is where the music industry needs to change its broken system and accept what is happening right now. I’m really hoping that these tracks will be high quality MP3 files. I’m assuming that most music buyers listen to a record and if they like it, buy it. I downloaded the Stars record when it leaked so that i would have a week for it to sink in before i talked or wrote about it. However, i also pre-ordered the disc.
I’ve never been a huge Radiohead fan but i WILL be supporting this release. Even if you dislike their music, dl it anyways. The number of downloads will speak for itself. Though, this may be some marketing ploy to get listeners to buy the box set (its $82) which features “both CD and vinyl versions of the album, plus an additional CD/vinyl of more new songs, with the CD also including digital pictures and other such goodies. It also comes with a big photo/art book” and comes out on 10/3/07. If the record is really good i plan on getting the box set too.
These days, artists are doing it for themselves and gaining support (albeit slowly) without a label. In this case though, Radiohead already has legions of fans and had no record company to take their profits. In conclusion, dl the Radiohead album off their website and pay for it if you want. Its about time someone this big acknowledged that this is a new era for music.
